Vehicle Access Aids
Vehicle Access Aids
Getting in and out of a car can become increasingly difficult as mobility changes. Whether you struggle with back pain, reduced hip flexibility, weakness in your legs, or use a wheelchair, the right car access aid can make a significant difference to your independence and confidence.
At Des Gosling Mobility, we supply and fit a full range of car access aids and mobility aids for vehicles, covering everything from simple grab handles to powered swivel seats and person lifts. All of our adaptations are assessed and fitted by our team at our Melbourne workshop, and we are Motability accredited so we can fit access aids as part of the Motability scheme as well as for private customers.
Car Access Aids and Mobility Aids We Supply
Our range of vehicle access aids includes swivel seats that rotate 90 degrees so you can step in and out without twisting, transfer plates that bridge the gap between a wheelchair and the vehicle seat, and grab handles that give a firm point to push up from when getting in or out. For those who find it difficult to climb into taller vehicles, our powered electronic side step lowers the step height, while person lifts use an electronically powered arm and sling to assist the transfer from wheelchair to seat. We also offer rise and fall seats, raised seat height adaptations, extended seat runners, spring-assisted seat slides, and transfer tools, so there is a solution for most situations.
All of our car mobility aids work on a wide range of cars and vans. Where aids such as swivel seats need a certain amount of door clearance, we check this at the assessment stage so you can be confident the solution will work for your vehicle. Frequently Asked Questions About Car Access Aids
What helps you get in and out of a car?
It depends on the difficulty. Grab handles help with balance, swivel seats turn to face the door so you do not have to twist, transfer plates bridge the gap from a wheelchair, and a powered side step lowers the climb into higher vehicles.
What is the best mobility aid for getting out of a car?
For most people it is a swivel seat or a grab handle. A swivel seat rotates towards the open door so you can come straight out rather than twisting, while a grab handle gives a firm point to push up from. Des Gosling assesses what works for you first.
Do car access aids work on any vehicle?
Most do. Grab handles, transfer plates and seat aids fit a wide range of cars and vans. A few aids, such as swivel seats, need a certain amount of door space, which is checked at the assessment.
Can car access aids be fitted through Motability?
Yes. Des Gosling is Motability accredited and fits access aids as part of Motability adaptations, as well as for private customers.
