Hand Controls

Des Gosling Mobility Derby offer the following hand controls for increased mobility and convenience:

Push/Pull Brake Accelerator

Jeff Gosling System IIIJeff Gosling Hand Controls Ltd.’s Push/Pull Brake Accelerator is an advanced push/pull hand control. Designed primarily for use by people with limited or no use of their legs, the hand control allows the brake and accelerator to be operated using the right hand. Using axial bearing races at its main pivot point gives the hand controls a remarkably smooth pivotal operation with no unwanted ‘free play’. It also has the benefit of Leg Impact Protection System (L.I.P.S) – a patented two-part moulded guard designed to shield the legs of the driver in the unlikely event of the vehicle being involved in an accident. Other features include a latex-free handle, making it suitable for all drivers.

The hand controls also have the optional extra of an indicator switch built in to the end of the handle, maintaining easy operation of the indicators whilst driving.

Due to the right hand being used primarily for operation of the hand controls, this product is frequently used in conjunction with a steering aid; to assist in steering the car with only one hand.

Some users also benefit from having either a pedal guard or a hinged accelerator fitted with this product. The pedal guard is a system used to block access to the pedals when driving with the hand controls; and is particularly useful for users suffering from leg spasms. The hinged accelerator is a modification which allows the accelerator pedal to be folded up out of the way when not in use, creating more space in the footwell.

Carospeed

CarospeedCarospeed Classic is a universal floor-mounted hand control that moves the accelerator and brake pedals to an intuitive hand control; push for accelerator and pull to brake. The Carospeed is a left hand operated control and therefore is strongly recommended for use with automatic gearboxes only.

Each Carospeed comes fitted with a hill holder to hold the brake pedal down. In this way hands are freed at traffic lights to change gears or tune the radio. Cruise control is an optional extra and its set function is activated using the same button as the hill-holder.
Carospeed is available in two versions: the standard model with only the basic accelerator and brake functions, and the indicator model with integral indicators for right and left. Both models can be installed in most vehicles and are styled and shaped to fit in with the rest of the car interior.

Due to the left hand being used primarily for operation of the hand controls, this product is frequently used in conjunction with a steering aid; to assist in steering the car with only one hand.

K5 Gas Ring

K5 Gas RingThe K5 Gas ring is a popular steering wheel mounted, electrically powered, hand control; allowing the vehicle’s acceleration to be controlled by either pushing or pulling a ring, which is located just under the steering wheel. The ring is placed under the original wheel of the car, keeping the natural feel of driving and in order to allow you an excellent direction control in the curves. The design of the K5 is an extremely unobtrusive adaptation; its particular position allows you to keep the airbag, all the wheel regulations and an easy access to the car controls, without obstructing or restricting the drive of those people who don’t use it.

Acceleration can be controlled by both pulling the ring towards the steering wheel with the tips of the fingers, and pushing it away from the wheel using the back of the fingers. The ring can also be operated using only the thumb whilst resting the hand on the brake lever. Due to the lightness of the spring within the ring, fatigue in the fingers is not a problem when using the K5. Since both hands are occupied with controlling the braking, accelerating, and steering the K5 is only suitable for installing in vehicles with an automatic gearbox.

K5 Gas RingThe vehicle’s braking is controlled via a brake lever which is pushed down to operate. The brake lever is fitted to the right hand side of the steering wheel as a standard, although it can be fitted on the left hand side if required.

On the underside of the brake lever there are two buttons. One of these buttons allows the brake to be locked on, perfect for when setting off or waiting in traffic. The other is a simple on/off switch which controls the throttle limiter. When on it allows the throttle to be limited to 60% allowing for smoother acceleration at low speeds, perfect for driving inner city driving and slow speed manoeuvres.

Another feature of the K5 is a safety cut-out of the accelerator; as soon as the brake is pressed on it will kill the throttle, preventing you from driving against the brakes.

The Over Ring Accelerator

Over Ring AcceleratorThe Over Ring Accelerator is a steering wheel mounted hand control, enabling a light and non-tiring acceleration control of the vehicle by pressing the ring towards the steering wheel. The Over Ring is available in two versions; either an electro-mechanical controlled version or a completely electronic, interfacing seamlessly with the vehicles original fly-by-wire system. Which system is used depends on the vehicle it is being fitted to, but between the two versions the Over Ring can be fitted to most vehicles.
